Position Overview 

The Summer Internship Program in Credit Underwriting is a professional, hands-on experience designed for upper-level undergraduate students pursuing degrees in Business, Finance, or related fields. Over the course of 10 weeks, interns will gain exposure to the commercial credit analysis process, participate in executive-level meetings, and develop critical analytical and professional skills through real-world assignments. This internship offers mentorship, structured training, and the opportunity to contribute meaningfully to the Credit Administration team at Midwest BankCentre. 

Core Responsibilities 

  • Credit Analysis Training: Learn methodologies used in commercial credit underwriting, including evaluation of cash flow, collateral, and borrower/guarantor strength.
  • Team Collaboration: Work closely with experienced underwriters to gain insight into day-to-day workflows and decision-making processes.
  • Executive Credit Committee Attendance: Observe real-time credit decisions by attending weekly executive credit meetings and reviewing loan packages.
  • Project Work: Support strategic and analytical projects such as portfolio reviews, industry research, or data summarization.
  • Capstone Project: Prepare and present an independent underwriting analysis of a real commercial loan request to the Credit team. 

Desired Qualifications 

  • Currently enrolled in a Bachelor’s degree program (junior year preferred); majoring in Business, Finance, Economics, or related field.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Excel.
  • Strong critical thinking, attention to detail, and collaboration skills.
  • Demonstrated curiosity and willingness to learn.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication. 

Learning Objectives & Outcomes 

By the end of the internship, interns will: 

  • Build foundational knowledge of commercial lending and credit risk analysis.
  • Apply concepts by conducting a loan underwriting assessment and presenting recommendations.
  • Gain exposure to a variety of financing structures and key decision-making criteria.
  • Strengthen communication, professional inquiry, and analytical thinking through mentorship and team engagement.
  • Understand MBC’s credit culture and evaluate the credit profession as a long-term career path. 

General Program Structure 

  • Weekly Development Sessions (goal setting, communication, leadership, etc.)
  • Cross-functional Group Project culminating in a final executive presentation
  • Networking events, team-building activities, and bank-wide experiences
  • Mentorship from employees across the organization, including the Credit team
